Ben Elenbaas and one of his fine customers, Matt, joined me on the river today. We were blessed with a bunch of hookups but brought only two steelies to the boat. Matt had never fished for steelhead with a fly, but he drew on his boyhood days of chasing steelhead on the Rogue, which enabled him to cast, manage line, and fight the fish very well. He was one of the quickest studies I’ve had in the boat this year. We just had some issues closing the deal.

All in all, we had a great day together, and Ben, once again, was his usual fishing machine—as well as a most gracious host for Matt. Best flies today were chartreuse and Oregon cheese nuke eggs and the flashback stone fly.
