Mental test

The Muskegon River continues to flow at levels and clarity that bode well for steelhead fishing.  With the cloud cover we had today, significantly greater numbers of fish were on gravel and in the deeper glides.  Longtime friend Jeff brought his friend Jack, who is a hunter and outdoorsman, but was new to fly fishing for steelhead.  He quickly caught on to the cast and soon was into his first steelhead.  Our landing percentage again today was less than desired, but the buck Jack put in the boat helped erase memories of fish lost and fish that simply refused to open their lips. Trout are becoming more active—today keying on caddis pupa fished below indicators.  As for Jeff, he had his shots, but as we noted, today was payback for days past when he could do no wrong in getting the fish into the net.  In short, a character test which both guys passed with flying colors—surely a whole better than did I!  Thanks, guys; I really enjoyed our time together.
