Trout Opener

Statewide, trout season opens today. Traditionally this “holiday” means a lot to many across the State of Michigan as rivers that have been closed since the end of September open up to trout fishing. Enjoy your time today exploring your favorite old haunts.

My son Zach and I took a float yesterday from Pine St. to New Bridge on our home waters. The Muskegon is low and clear for this time of year. Steelhead numbers were pretty thin, honestly I can’t say I have the day-to-day intel we’d normally have since we’re still closed for business due to the State mandated shut down.

We spent much of the day swinging for drop back steelhead. Two steelhead were hooked by my son Zach briefly before they charged the boat and said good bye. As we had hoped, the afternoon sunshine provided enough warmth to fire up the stone flies. We had about 1.5 hours of dry fly fishing which was a nice change of pace. Our best brown trout was a very healthy 14-15” fish.

MUCC was integral in getting the ban on “motor boats” lifted under the governors previous emergency order. Their law suit coupled with pressure from our Republican led Senate is giving everyone the opportunity to get back on the water for recreational fishing. Please be respectful and practice the necessary social distancing required by the order so we can continue to enjoy the outdoors our way! The new order continues to have business shut down until 5/15/20.
