Guides’ Reunion

It had been way too long since RiverQuest guide Don Graham and I had fly fished together, so today amid misty, overcast skies most of the day, we hit the Muskegon River with a vengence. The bite on poppers was excellent, to the point where we lost count of the smallmouth bass we boated today. An eagle, herons large and small galore, cedar waxwings (Don’s favorite songbird), and smack talk from one of our river cottage pals, who kept chirping at us from his perch high above the river, made the day all the better. With the bump in water flow, we had no problem getting around with my boat, and the continued low water seemed to concentrate the fish; where we would hook one, more often than not, another from the same area would follow.  In short, a most delightful day of fly fishing sport for an amazing game fish and, best of all, of two buddies reconnecting with one another while doing what we love best.
