Boyd, Oh, Boyd!

Boyd at Early Light

Early light on the Muskegon River as Boyd fly fishes for salmon with first-timer Jim, who below holds the  first fly-caught fish of his life.

Little did Boyd or Jim know, though, that after lunch a 26 lb. behemoth would suck in Boyd’s nuke egg.  We didn’t time the battle royal, but about half-way through the tussle, Jim estimated that Boyd has been hooked up for 20 minutes. Surely, another 15 or 20 or so elapsed before I hoisted the buck into the boat.  Boyd has landed marlin, tuna, and tarpon, but when he couldn’t lift this guy from the depths when nearly played out with a 10 wt. rod for fear of breaking it, Boyd pronounced this Chinook the hardest fighting, strongest salmon he has ever hooked—and Boyd has been fishing with us for nearly 10 years and with another guide on the MO before that.  So, hats off to both guys; Jim for your first and Boyd for prevailing over the beast of the day.
