Cold Rewards On The Muskegon River

Winter Steelhead Fly Fishing – February

A balmy 5 degrees at 9am. was the best temperature reading I could find before we headed out for some winter fly fishing today on the Muskegon River. I had certainly hoped it would be a warmer start, but these were the cards we were dealt for today’s charter fly fishing trip. Thankfully the steelhead didn’t seem to mind the chilly temperatures and it wasn’t long before Teresa posed her first Muskegon River steelhead. Teresa’s husband had his chances too, but he readily admits Teresa always gets the photo. Congrats–it was fun for sure!

35 degree reality

Last day of January and possibly the last above average temperature we see in the next week or so was reason enough to swing flies this morning on the Muskegon River. Water temperatures have dropped to a more normal winter reading of around 35 degrees....

Pays to check

Man it felt good to get on the the river today. I missed the previous break in the arctic express while I was laid up from Bronchitis. Conditions on the Muskegon are favorable for winter steelhead with slightly higher than normal flows around 2400cfs and...

It’s official

I think it’s officially safe to say winter has arrived. While our river temperature remains well above average for early December, it should soon drop into the upper 30’s. Swinging for winter steelhead is a challenge—just like winter steelhead are supposed to be! If you want...

Trade offs

60 degrees and sunny in February is hard to complain about. However, it certainly comes with some trade offs! Konrad joined me for his first steelhead trip. Things started off pretty solid with a very good early morning grab.  Unfortunately as the sun gained altitude...

Chasing Winter

The thought of snow blanketing the river banks and weighing heavy on the limbs of our beautiful white pines had been much anticipated by John and Don when they booked their first winter steelhead trip. Unfortunately Mother Nature had a far different vision in store...

Unsettled

Steelhead fishing on the Muskegon River lately has been a lot like the weather—its had its ups & downs. Dr. Buckley joined me yesterday and we enjoyed a very nice January day on river swinging flies. While our opportunities weren't numerous we were graced by some...

Just in time for Christmas

The polar plunge has finally retreated back to Canada. 35 degrees on the river felt balmy compared to most days recently. The level finally bumped back to a little closer to normal after several days of wild fluctuations—thankfully! Pictured is Peter with a beauty that took...
