Today was one of those days that helps a guide refocus and remember why we do this. Art from the Chicago area joined me today for a day of swinging for some fall chrome. The back story is that Art is recently retired both from his career and from his hobby of many years, auto racing. While He still works occasionally as a driving instructor he has decided to try as many new things as he can in his golden years and maybe find a new pastime. Art is very new to fly fishing, he took one lesson earlier this summer, and jumped into our sport full tilt. After some time this morning working only on casting the spey rod and managing all that line we got positioned and got down to some serious fishing. It wasn’t long after that that Art was rewarded with the beautiful fall Steelhead pictured above. To be a part of teaching someone who has a desire to learn all they can about this sport we love and then watch it all come together to produce success and see the absolute joy and enthusiasm in the student’s face is our ultimate reward as a guide. Having Art back it up a short time later with another beauty was the icing on the cake for today. Gongrats Art on your successful day and I wish you the best as you pursue you newfound passion – chasing chrome and thank you for letting us be a part of that.
