So, so good to get back in the boat to chase smallmouth bass with best fishing bud, RiverQuest guide Don Graham. Despite less than ideal weather—cold front with winds up to 25 mph—the smallies wanted to play, as did a couple of pike. As one might expect, with the cold temps and wind, top water poppers were not the fly of choice; rather we needed to go below stripping streamers. Here’s the best of the day, brought to hand by Don and tipping the Boga at a solid four pounds. These fish are strong and fast and put Don’s eight weight rod (and occasionally, mine as well) into a prolonged bend. All in all, a great day all ’round!
