Current Jenison Public Schools Superintendent, Tom TenBrink, and former JPS Superintendent, Dr. Dave Dresslar, are two of my dearest friends and former colleagues. Today, they schooled some of Michigan’s Muskegon River steelhead on the Muskegon River, and what a blast it was! Egg imitations, caddis, leaches, and buggers were on the menu and were met with an enthusiastic reception from the steelhead.
Characteristic of early May, the guys hooked Michigan’s Muskegon River steelhead in various stages of the spawning process. Tom holds a drop back hen, and Dave poses a darker hen that was not yet dropping eggs and that fought with the speed and strength of a fall steelhead. Tossed in was a massive, very bright buck that on its final leap, crashed back on the tippet, busting off immediately, much to Dave’s dismay. The guys also hooked bright skipper steelhead that true to form, popped out of the water repeatedly.
All in all, it was simply a great day with two of the finest men and educational leaders one could ever meet. It was my privilege to serve alongside them and now host them on the river we treasure so much.
