Husband and Wife First Timers Fly Fishing

Never gone fly fishing? No problem! Never gone fly fishing for steelhead? No problem! Never battled a double-digit steelhead? No problem—at least for Ohioans Sheila and John! I flat-out love to introduce people to our fly fishing sport so it was a delight to host Sheila and John.  Both learned quickly and soon were casting and managing line beautifully. And, when they connected with steelhead, they listened to Coach Tommie, only to beam with pride when the steelhead they hooked were brought to hand.

The rain and dark cloud cover (not to mention thunderstorms) we dealt with today, while not Chamber of Commerce weather, was music, however, to steelhead ears. They took flies throughout the day and unlike yesterday, when the bright sun put them off their feed big time, not so today. Both egg imitations and nymph patterns continue to produce.  Although none of us knows whether another push of fish will be prompted by the rain and subsequent increase of flow to come and visit us, here’s hoping for more fun and frolic with one of the world’s greatest gamefish on Michigan’s Muskegon River.
