Way More Than a Fishing Trip!

How about a three boat Muskegon River float trip to honor 80 year old Grandpa Ken on this notable birthday? Totally cool, that’s what it was today with Ken, son Scott, and granddaughter Colleen. As I’ve noted before, I love these family outings, and today’s was especially meaningful. Chinook salmon are in the river and staging for the fall spawn; Ken, Scott, and fifth grader Colleen hooked kings. Colleen was amazing as she learned to cast the 11′ switch rod with an indicator and to mend line for that elusive drag free drift. She was rewarded near the end of the day with a salmon she battled for a good ten minutes only to have the hook pull free as I, net in hand, stood poised to net the fish.  She was disappointed, of course, but smiled as we all praised her for what she had just accomplished.  Future fly fisherwoman, no doubt!

As for grandpa Ken, what a great birthday for him!  He fought his salmon while seated and followed my machine gun directions to a “T.” Happy birthday, Ken! So good to be a part of your special day.

Finally, I loved the way each of my fly fishermen patiently waited while one of them cast to the salmon. Scott insisted on watching while Ken and Colleen tried their hand with the long rod. Scott’s buck pulled the Boga at 15 lbs. and exemplified how the kings this year look especially healthy and heavy.

All in all, one terrific day for all—not the least of whom, the guide!
