Quick Study

Try less than 15 casts with a fly rod and a casting style you’ve never experienced and then hookup with a gorgeous fresh run hen steelhead, and you would be Craig—a first time steelhead fly fisherman!  I’ve had some quick studies over the years, but Craig was right up there with the best of them—even to the point of verbalizing some of my instructions when I prompted him to remind his experienced host of the “Do’s” and “Don’ts” of deep nymphing with a fly rod.  So fun to watch a newcomer to our sport fall under the spell of steelhead on the fly!

The spring steelhead run on the Muskegon River is underway with fresh run and winter fish holding in pools and glides in anticipation of longer days and warmer water temperatures, which will prompt them to seek out areas of the river in which to spawn.  Shown here are Craig, his host Pat, and my releasing a couple steelhead the guys brought to hand today.
