One would think that the fish gods would shower some love on two guys who trekked to the Muskegon River to stay at our Muskegon River Lodge and fly fish with their four buddies and guides Jay, Don, and me.  Oh, the gods gave love to the guys in Don’s and Jay’s boats but not mine: one pathetic looking sucker that, for reasons only known to itself, decided to suck in a purple egg sucking leech.  Finally, after witnessing the guys fishing hard all day, I told Matt and Josh, it just wasn’t meant to be for them, despite their casting and managing line beautifully.

As I started stowing Matt’s rod, I told Josh to keep casting because as the old fishing maxim goes, “You never can tell.” Then, inexplicably, it happened: love from the fish gods in the form of a beautiful male steelhead affixed to Josh’s fly!  Soon, there was Josh with a new-found grin, hoisting his prize.  What a great end of the day for two guys who persevered only to be rewarded.  Here I am releasing the buck and Josh’s beaming all the while.
