Annual Rite of Passage

Longtime customer and friend, Jeff, started taking his nephew, Grant, fly fishing with me a couple of years ago a couple of weeks before school starts each year. Grant is now a sophomore at Michigan State University where classes begin soon so today was his day  on the river with Uncle Jeff.

Heavy rains had bumped the Muskegon River’s flow a bit and colored the water so I wasn’t sure if we would be able to get the smallmouth bass to look up to take our top water offerings, but after a slow (make that a dead) start, the popper bite was on.  Grant nailed the fatty he poses, a fish that gave him all he could want and more. More came to hand on top and on streamers, not none quite like Grant’s off to school present. Great job, Grant!  Fortunate you are to have an uncle like Jeff whose highest hopes for you to become a fly fisherman have come to fruition!

Smallmouth bass fly fishing continues excellent on the Muskegon and should hold up well into September. Tight lines all!
