Not much surface action last night, so I spent the evening nymphing for some nice trout with a surprise drop back steelhead.

A very enjoyable evening fishing with Roger, we stayed out  late last night because the fishing was good, Roger calls me before seven am to tell me he made it to work on time, thanks I needed the wake up call.

Last evening on the 2nd of our tw0 day trip with Andy and JD from Chicago Fly Fishing Outfitters was one of my best days on the water I have had in quite some time. In combination, the weather, outstanding fishing, and great company, along with a rare early opportunity to wet wade, made for an evening a fly fisherman could only dream about.

Emergence’s are taking place daily but with an absolute smorgasbord of food available the trout aren’t looking up much. Nymphing behind the spawning suckers is the game! Pictured is one of our nice fish from last night.

Fishing on the Mo’ currently is right on par with years past logs. Hatches are happening but day-to-day differences are very evident. Last night was likely one of the largest sulpher spinner falls I have ever witnesses. While this sounds epic, the area produced only one rising trout. While this may frustrate some, I, on the other-hand, smile at my river. The Muskegon currently is so jam-packed with fry, sucker spawn, crawfish, and other food sources, the river trout just aren’t needing to look up for food.

Andy and JD of Chicago Fly Fishing Outfitters joined me last night and again this evening for some really great fishing and some amazing scenes that only a trout fisherman can appreciate! Pictured are the guys with a couple from yesterday.

Had the opportunity to fish with my good friend Dave Lamb today. Honestly, we weren’t expecting anything but a good time on a beautiful, but hot, spring day and the fish didn’t disappoint. It was too bright and the water was too clear for streamers and because we fished during the day not much chance for dries. However, nymphing behind sucker beds got it done! we had good action today with plenty of rainbows in the 16″ class and this nice 20″ brown. All of our bigger fish were taken on caddis nymphs today, micro eggs brought plenty of action, but mostly on stockers.

The only problem with today is the one picture of Dave with his nicest rainbow of the day was taken with the camera on my phone and for some reason the file won’t transfer. Guess it is time to get a new camera for the boat!

Despite record high temperatures, Bill and Ida Sidor joined me for a day trip on the Mo’. Conditions warranted switching up to an evening trip, but an even obligation to my son on his birthday kept the switch from taking place.  As Bill and Ida can attest with their many days a year logged on my boat, sometimes you just never know.

We started the day with streamers, only to bale, due to the sweating efforts required. Bill, a long time fan of nymphing was ready for the change. New location, and a few casts later  landed Bill his best brown trout ever  on a 5wt.  While this bruiser not only mandated a fight of the reel, we couldn’t help but smile at our hot weather fortune!

Bring on the bugs!

A made-to-order streamer day was in store for Ben Elanbaas and Chris Miller on the Mo’. Deep over-cast skies with a warm rain brought the river to life. Large streamer patterns such as  Galloup’s  Articulated Fat Head and Ditch Pig were key players. Retrieve speed was the key variable as these trout are educated. While the day was great for all, Chris stole the show with a couple of really nice browns and a memory that will replay for years to come.

Absolutely the most gorgeous conditions possible on the Muskegon today:  clear skies, temps in the 70′s, and calm winds.  Orioles, lots of orioles, sang their beaks off, much to the delight of Don, who loves these colorful, elusive birds.  The river is dropping and is now clear so streamer stripping becomes more of a challenge—especially so with the bright skies.  Nonetheless, Captain Don and I gave it s shot, and the trout cooperated until late morning when they went into a major shut-down mode.  Pictured is a fat brown that smacked one of Greg Senyo’s beadhead leech patterns.  Some mayflies and caddis came off, but it will take a day or two of warm weather to get them going in sufficient numbers to elicit regular rises.  Given the forecast for temps in the 70′s and 80′s over the next week, however, our long anticipated dry fly fishing should materialize soon.  All in all, today was one of those “great days to be alive” sort of experiences.  Beauty everywhere and some willing trout along with Captain Don’s most enjoyable companionship, made for a terrific time on the MO.

Capt Dave DeVries and myself, had the pleasure of hosting several wonderful women of  The Fly Girls of Michigan, for the last two days. While the wind was blowing for much of their trip it certainly didn’t discourage. Though the bugs wanted to play the winds didn’t leave much of a chance for dry fly fishing the the last couple days. Streamer fishing has been the game; dropping water conditions has left the fish moody and many fly changes have been required.  Caddis, bwo’s, sulfers, March browns, and gray drakes are starting to get looks….a little less wind and more consistent emergence’s will have the fish looking up very soon!

Fishing was with the Fly Girls will always be a great pleasure! Thank you Ann, Tina, Chis, Sherry, Joan, and Katie; we look forward to days on the river with you again!

Day two with Patti and Duane was perfect for streamers; rising water, slight stain, steady barometric pressure, minus the wind. The wind made things rather challenging today despite the near perfect water conditions. The heavy rain from yesterday brought the river up significantly and added a very nice color. Prime streamer fishing conditions are present, we just need the wind to take a hike! Over-coming the wind was the ‘trout huntress”, Patti Beasley with another fine Muskegon River brown.
