Early September steelhead – a true unicorn

Salmon and steelhead season is nearly upon us on the Muskegon River. Today’s fishing for me was really more about the process and the enjoyment I get casting and fishing two-handed rods. Sure, both the fly and spot were calculated, but honestly I expected only a very very small chance of catching a steelhead. Much to my surprise my fourth swing of the morning was greeted with an unmistakeable grab–fishon! After a significant fight and nearly going over top of my waders following the fish I was able to land this terrific early September steelhead. I haven’t stopped pinching myself yet….
