Winter Steelhead

High water continues

The Muskegon River remains high. No major precipitation is forecasted in the near term so the river will slowly fall over the next several days. Full sinking lines and weighted flies are pretty key on the two-handed rods. Larger flies nymphed on the soft seams...

December Sunshine

The December sunshine was welcomed after a cold last week. The weekend storm raised the river considerably; clarity is tough as you head downstream of Newaygo. Heavy sink tips and full sinking lines didn’t pose an issue for Kris as she was able to connect with...

Mental Health Day

Dr. Westhouse joined me today for a much needed day away from it all chasing steelhead. Despite being below freezing all day the light winds and gentle morning snow made for a perfect day. Winter weather has arrived in earnest and brought our river temperature down...

No storm let down?

I’m honestly not disappointed that I didn’t have to shovel snow out of my boat all day today one bit. The forecasted snow storm shifted East and left us with several glimpses at the sun throughout the day. It was cold, but our winter steelhead...

Not exactly, but happy

Tranquil weather has not been the theme lately, at least for any length of time. Yesterday was truly a rare day with decent temperatures and calm winds. Together this made for a pretty enjoyable day on the river. The river dropped pretty significantly yesterday. The day...

Lets say winter now

I’ve been reluctant to start using the word “winter” in my posts mostly cause I really haven’t been ready, but I think it’s time. Melting snow has dipped the river temperatures consistently below 38 degrees lately. Now that the flow is a little more reasonable...

Birthday Present

I spent a good part of my birthday with my favorite two-handed rod looking for a nice winter steelhead on the swing. I honestly wasn’t going to be disappointed if I wasn’t successful, it was just a great day to be out. Thankfully the river...

Cold Rewards On The Muskegon River

Winter Steelhead Fly Fishing – February

A balmy 5 degrees at 9am. was the best temperature reading I could find before we headed out for some winter fly fishing today on the Muskegon River. I had certainly hoped it would be a warmer start, but these were the cards we were dealt for today’s charter fly fishing trip. Thankfully the steelhead didn’t seem to mind the chilly temperatures and it wasn’t long before Teresa posed her first Muskegon River steelhead. Teresa’s husband had his chances too, but he readily admits Teresa always gets the photo. Congrats–it was fun for sure!
